The Compromise of 1850 Name of Student Institute Affiliation In September of 1850, as part of the Compromise of 1850, five laws were passed that impacted the nation's history and slavery. Likely, the proportion of Free states to slave states in the United States Senate was tipped out of whack due to California's choice to become a free state and enter the Union in 1849 (Porter, 2020). On January 29, 1850, Senator Henry Clay presented several resolutions to prevent war by bringing the North and the South together on common ground. In the 1850 Compromise, members of Congress debated possible pathways for California's admission to the Union. Stephen Douglas, a Democrat from Illinois, played a significant role in the negotiations that led to the Compromise, which led to California's independence. The people of New Mexico and Utah held the key to determining whether or not the slave trade would continue in Washington, District of Columbia. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 was the legislation that made it official that the North was off-limits due to this reason. The local and federal authorities were responsible for apprehending and bringing back any enslaved people who had escaped their owners. The commissioners were given a reward of ten dollars for every fugitive that was captured and brought back.
