Being one of the most frequently ingested substances globally, caffeine and its use evoke interest from the scientific research community on its effects on human health. It is a proven fact that the consumption of caffeinated products causes pharmacological changes in the body. Consequentially, this paper analyzes some of the research-based enhancement effects of caffeine on human cognitive functions.
Studies indicate that elderly people who consume caffeine have improved psychomotor performance, cognitive function, attention span, and feeling of general well-being. Unhealthy lifestyles and old age-related health problems largely contribute to cognitive decline in human beings as they age. Caffeine comes to the rescue of the old generation as a harmless remedy for enhancing their cognitive functions. The analysis from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging suggested that the use of caffeine reflected a better cognitive performance of elderly people over the age of 70 years (Gupta & Gupta, 2020). In support of the same, further studies indicate that the continued use of caffeine boosts the cognitive function in elderly people, more so in women (Gupta & Gupta, 2020). Caffeine’s ability to reduce the levels of cognitive decline implies that the elderly could effectively rely on it to enjoy the improved cognitive performance without using complicated methods of brain development. As will be discussed further, caffeine also has its enhancement effects on cognitive functions among younger people.
