ABSTRACT
C.S Lewis shows his prowess in writing by managing to place both the spiritual and the supernatural in one book. Lewis in his book, the great Divorce, manages to put the divine aspect in a setting that would best fit for a fantasy or any other work that strives to explain out fiction. This paper, therefore, provides a synopsis of the Great Divorce that is then followed by a personal response. The reader will be able to gain both the knowledge on the great divorce and personal feelings towards the book upon reading The Great Divorce
The book begins with melancholic person, the narrator, walking down a very evil town. The narrator sees that everyone in the city is suffering in one way or another whenever he looks around. When he gets into the bus, he realizes that all the passengers are ghosts. Moreover, as the bus gets closer to heaven these ghosts turnout to be people and the city becomes different with less evil going on. The narrator finds out that the landscape is real when he steps out of the bus, and he gets hurt physically. The irony happens when these ghosts are allowed to pass through the same land and get into heaven.
The passengers are allowed to choose their destiny whether they want to remain ghosts or become spirits once the bus reaches Heaven city. The choice of either being in heaven or hell lies upon human being decisions, and it is implicated that the ghosts are in hell whereas the spirits are in heaven. In this book, it is clearly shown that the ghosts assume the typical human role of a human who in any case willingly decides to remain in hell. Apparently, it does not sound foolish, this is because, in order for the ghosts to be spirits and enter into heaven they need to detach themselves completely from something. This is where the meaning of the book "The Great Divorce" was generated.
For the ghosts to get into heaven, the spirits ask the ghost to forego everything that hold them back. These things include bad emotions, addiction, hate, alcohol among many others. Because these things have no sacred place in paradise, the ghosts are, therefore, required to put these things willingly behind them. An example shown is Michael’s mother ghost. These ghost wishes that it can go against all odds just to go back and be with her son. The ghost says that Michael is hers, and not even God can take the son away from her. From this example of Michael’s mother, it is clearly brought out that even love sometimes can be considered to be a bad emotion since it caused a limitation and blocked Michael’s mother from getting into heaven.
