Money can cause a lot of evil in the society. In this case, money is defined as any valuable and limited resource. In most cases, individuals engage in evil activities to either acquire wealth or maintain their wealth status. As a result of the state of affairs, money is considered as the root of all evil (Krause, 2004). For instance, a company would opt to apply environmentally unfriendly production methods to increase its profit margins. This is despite the methods harming the environment and the individuals residing in the environment. All the same, every action can be monetarily quantified thereby ensuring that cash returns justify any evil act.
Firstly, money creates a social stratification system that segregates societies on the basis of wealth. In this case, there are three social classes: the upper class that includes the rich who can afford luxuries such as yachts and holiday packages in exotic destinations; the middle class that include those with access to basic amenities; and the lower class who have difficulties accessing even the most basic of amenities such as clothing, food and housing. For that matter, the three classes are self-perpetuating in subsequent generations thereby making it difficult for impoverished individuals to advance within the stratified financial class system (Krause, 2004). For instance, a child who is raised by a rich family can easily access education and investment opportunities while their counterpart who is raised an impoverished family finds it difficult to pay for their education or invest despite being intelligent. Thus, money creates social injustices in the form of stratified social classes that are self-perpetuating and difficult to bridge.
Secondly, money allows individuals to justify their cruelty. In this case, the rich individuals believes that their financial positioning assigns them a superior status over their poorer counterparts and entitles them to treat such individuals with cruelty (Morgan, 2012). For instance, a rich individual would typically buy a parcel of land that they desire; and if that is not possible then they would use dishonorable means – such as murder, corruption, bribery and force – to acquire the parcel of land. In reference to that, rich individuals are often cruel.
Finally, money perpetuates sycophancy since the rich individual is unsure whether their friends occupy that position because of money or genuine affection. In this case, the rich individual is often approached for favors that range from financial grants to associational influence.
