Analyze How the Author’s Personality Is Reflected in Different Characters of “The Picture of Dorian Gray” By Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray picture remains a puzzle in literacy circles. Is it a scornful commentary regarding Victorian period philistinism? Is it an ethics tale against permitting the influence of others to conquer one’s individualism? Is it a reproach of a society that values beauty and youth over substance and morality? All of these have been the emphasis of scholarly review in the century after the release of the novel. However, its most enthralling line of scrutiny regards the author himself. The Dorian Gray picture is of specific interest as an autobiographical portrait of the writer in three alter egos and offered an eerie foreshadowing of Wilde’s own life even as the writer argued that art never mirrors life.
Wilde is cited as saying in respect to the Dorian Gray picture: “Basil Hallward is what I believe I am: Lord Henry is what the globe perceives me: Dorian what I might like to be-in other ages, maybe” (Wilde, & Frankel, 2012). Later, Oscar is stated to have outlined that “Hallward signifies a sacrificed and suffering artist; Lord Henry represents a wit and a mature philosopher; Dorian is comparable to a youthful aesthete-about-town” (Davis, 2013).
