Welcome to the Monkey House Themes
The book “Welcome to the Monkey House” is a collection of several stories centered on the same theme. While doing research on those themes, I found some of them to be futuristic and ethical suicide just to name a few which we will be exploring in the proceeding paragraphs.
According to the author, the government is concerned with the ever-increasing population and therefore puts measures in place to curb it. The government places fake morality on its people by allowing “ethical suicides” (Vonnegut 30), through the use of birth control pills which have adverse effects on the people such as numbness from the waist down. They manage to enforce this by making the people believe that it is the right course of action to be taken and that “17 billion human beings. That was far too many mammals for a planet that small”[sic] (Vonnegut 30). In this way, they (the government) try to control the way human beings reproduce and die which goes against any moral code since death and reproduction are two natural occurrences and no one has the authority to dictate how the two will take place.
Another theme that has been portrayed is that of the future. Vonnegut is an omniscient narrator that tells the story progressively by giving a detailed account of the future in “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow,” “Unready to Wear,” “Harrison Bergeron,” “Miss Temptation,” and “Welcome to the Monkey House” (Ellerhoff, 2016) The story “Harrison Bergeron” however, is the most optimistic of those aforementioned. Vonnegut tries to show that the changes made in the world are positive ones which is a complete contrast to the condition of the future world of “Harrison Bergeron” which is absolutely terrifying.
