Assimilation has been an issue for the United States since the early human history. Moreover, the early history witnessed a move that majorly categorized and classified people based on their perceived differences. Over the centuries, the whites formed a unified community that readily discriminated colored people. This is because the whites considered themselves superior to the colored people. The idea of racial differences divided, ranked and separated the human race from each other and justified the dominance of other ethnic elements. It brought up the idea and concept to assimilate other races to promote equality among different race and led to the development of the various models of assimilation. Different groups started to share their differences and similarities with an aim of promoting peace and putting an end to the racial war and ethnic differences (Rivera, 2014).
There exist three models of assimilation in the United States, which include Anglo conformity, the melting port, and the cultural pluralism. The models allowed the minority group to accept the norms and values of the majority as superior. Moreover, the past decade has witnessed massive growth in the number of immigrants. It brought about desired changes in education, identity concepts and history that sparked the cultural fusion. The fusion of culture and ethnic minorities into the dominant American culture brought about peace and unity (Rivera, 2014).
