Collapse of the Mayan empire, draws controversy to what led to the collapse, and has attracted researchers’ eyes. Decline of the Mayan empire led to collapse of civilization in the southern part of the kingdom, while civilization in the northern part of the empire flourished uninterrupted. Researchers and other scholars have given several reasons that led to the collapse of the empire. Over 88 theories that explain the fall of the Mayan empire have been identified, but there is no universally accepted theory that led to the collapse. Overpopulation, famine, drought, and war among the states are some the reasons historians believe to have contributed significantly to the fall. War among the states is believed to have intensified shortly before the collapse. Cities built fortified wars to shield them against their enemies, and the number of captives increased. Overpopulation in the Mayan empire led to a series of droughts. It led to straining of the agriculture sector in the kingdom; farm produce could not meet food needs in the kingdom. This led to malnutrition and increased mortality rate, this led low performance of the working population.
