All through the mid twentieth century, Europe underwent several events that changed their social, economic and cultural ways of life. The legacies of colonization, xenophobic attacks, and holocaust forced the region to being addressing issues such as who is an actual European, demographic shifts and immigration. Several artists attempted to explain the situation in the region, thus remarkable films such as Black Girl and La Haine; all from France came into the Limelight. The situation is Europe was difficult to explain, however artists and historians recorded the events through their various respective works.
The film Black girl tries to explain the situation of immigrants in France. Diouana, the main character in the film is an immigrant from Dakar Senegal who works as a house help in France. On her journey to the foreign land she was promised to see beautiful shops, people and places, however upon arrival she realizes that this is not the case because she is confined to the kitchen, the living room and the bed room. She thinks to herself that people back at home think she is living her best life while in real sense, things are completely opposite.
