Differences Between Greek and Macedonian Societies
Ancient sources allude to the uniqueness of Macedonians to the Greeks. Language, cults, myths, rituals, customs, and sociopolitical culture illustrate specific differences between the Greeks and Macedonian societies (Mladenovska-Ristovska, 2017). Principally, Greeks had a polis structure. Specifically, each city-state included government buildings and temples. Conversely, ancient Macedonian society featured a royal structure with state institutions and a hereditary ruler. The “Macedonian laws” governed state institutions. Unlike the Greeks, Macedonians had the right to appeal in front of their kings (Mladenovska-Ristovska, 2017). These differences caused mutual antipathy and constant hostility between the Greeks and Macedonians.
