The antebellum period (1815-1860) is considerably the most vivid and dynamic in the entire history of America. The market revolution, industrial revolutions, transportation, unprecedented urbanization and its consequences, the spawning of religious revivals like varied figures as Joseph Smith and Charles Finney as well as the various movements that sought to address the social evils extending from slavery to prostitution (Bodenhorn, 2000, p.213). Similarly, the expansion of territories and the rising sectional tensions that undermined the two party systems, led to the emergence of the Republican Party pushing the nation towards the fierce falling-out of the civil war (Jackson, & Cleveland, 2014, p.191).
Amongst the most stirring of all was the antebellum reform. Historians present the definition of the reform to be 1815-1860, the period following the termination of the 1812 war to the start of the Civil War. The ultimate change that emerged during this time is remarkable among the causes of heightened concern of the Americans. The Clergy’s decreasing authority and the religious revivals that occurred during the Great Awakening were most of the pieces of evidence of the American heightened anxiety. Another clear proof of the anxiety is the realization of the sense of purpose by women marked by the change of their roles from home production towards social production (Moorhead, 2012, p.280).
Furthermore, the nervousness that existed during this period is characterized by the secular reform’s movement proliferation. The emergence of labor reforms and unions are the evidential considerations that are associated with this period. Additionally, the series of labor strikes of the 1820s and 1830s are undisputable evidence for the heightened anxiety to improve the working conditions of labor. For instance, the formation of the first union for the nation (National Trades Union 1834) occurred during this period (Mintz, 1995, p.78).
