Automobile Theft
Automobile theft is a controversial depiction of violence and crime. Morales and Heitmann point out that car theft is not a past activity and offers an estimation of 721, 053 motor vehicles having been stolen in the recent two years. This statistic implies that 4.3 million dollars were lost in the hands of criminals. The fourth chapter of their book points out drugs as the main leading cause of car and motorcycle theft. Joseph started stealing automobile and motorcycle after dropping out of school in his early juvenile years. Having lacked the necessary education to keep him busy, he ventured into criminal activities that turned into a professional thief with clear links to the Mexican cartels. He made a fortune from unmolested and insured cars.
According to this chapter, music is said to be somehow connected to the theft of automobiles. This is credited to the fact that cars have been linked to popular music ever since the Second World War. The process of stealing cars has been frequently featured in form of lyrics, just like common themes showcased in films with dark and desperate tones. Car theft is further connected to broken relationships, loneliness and past failures. However, Joe Bonamassa’s points out in his ‘tennesse plates’, that car theft is linked to sexuality and adventure. In 1982, the federal government made an effort to reduce the rate of auto theft by aiming at chop shops among the organized criminal sector. The congress was in line with the chop shop measures but this was not the case with the Reagan administration official and manufacturers. Nonetheless, the pursuit made by the congress prevailed and was implemented in 1984 into law.
Since 2011, the statistics recorded on car theft has drastically increased with the latest statistics indicating that 110, 881 motor vehicles in New York being stolen in according to the federal and state crime reports. The application of technological antitheft innovation to correlate statistics on stolen cars and violent crime is inevitable due to the complex and confounding factors which are involved. Prominent changes were made at national level and included the antitheft technology and manufacturing, surveillance, legislative measures and insurance. Some of the common technological and innovative systems, which made an impact in 1980s, included the radio frequency identification (RFID), the club and the lojack. Security brought about the RFID technologies and attracted most manufacturers since security issues were the main challenges faced by many users.
