Non-literal collections require detailed study and analysis by experts to convert gathered signals into information that can be understood by humans and used in the process of decision making. The common methods of intelligence collections falling under the non-literal collections category include Imagery Intelligence (IMINT), Radar Intelligence (RADINT), and Electronic Intelligence (ELINT), among others (GlobalSecurity.org, 2019). Intelligence collection can either produce literal or non-literal intelligence, which is treated differently depending on who is handling the collections. Generally, non-literal intelligence collection involves the application of signals and can be dated back to World War One (Margulies, 2016).
