Philosophy for African American Struggle
The main challenge in the African struggles in the United States during the 20th century was how to respond to white society's ideology of avoiding inequality. However, Marcus Garvey Jr, Booker T. Washington, and W. E. B. Du Bois had a different approach to the African struggle.
Booker T. Washington was an educator, reformer, and influential black leader who preached the philosophy of self-help, racial solidarity, and accommodation to handle African struggle. Booker considered self-improvement through education, industrial training, and business ownership to the prevalent inequality between white and African Americans. According to his philosophy, it was necessary to accommodate the discrimination and concentrate on working hard and material prosperity (Verney, 2020). Therefore, accommodation can force recognition from the majority.
On the other hand, W. E. B. Du Bois had a conflicting philosophy of Double consciousness and the spirit of recognition. Du Bois agreed with Washington’s ideology of self-help. However, he faulted the philosophy by indicating how the correct education and voting rights could enhance recognition in a segregated society. For Dubois, African Americans should take action to air their grievances rather than being submissive (Meer,2019). Thus, earning freedom through economic and technical skills could leave many African Americans in abject poverty.
Marcus Garvey Centered the ideology on the philosophy of black pride. The ideology’s primary objective was to give black people a sense of worthiness for their race and color in a society marred with the majority perception of white supremacy. Garvey expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment of African Americans in the south and poverty and unemployment conditions in the North. The influential leader called upon the people of African ancestry in the Diaspora to redeem themselves from the colonial powers and be proud
