Most countries throughout the globe do at one point have time to carry out elections. People find time to go and line up in long queues to elect officials who will bring development to the community. It is the utmost aim of elections and a reason we elect our senators (Conley, 2012). When these elected officials get to power, power corrupts them. The essay seeks to explain the reasons for term limits on those Officials elected to the Senate or House of Representatives in the US.
The loss of touch with the people is one of the most common happenings around the world. When the elected officials get to the office, they tend to forget the ordinary people who participated in the process that delivered the offices they holding to them. Their cries do fall on deaf ears. The politicians are busy trying to amass wealth in any way at the prevalence of their countrymen and thus the reason for term limits (Fino & Michigan, 2011).
Most politicians fight to remain in power. During their tenure, politicians, commit so many injustices. They cling to the power to shield their crimes (Mooney et al. 2014). Term limits will be awakening call as they will know that at the end of it all, they will be held accountable. Moreover, they will increase the choice of voters by making elections more competitive and encouraging more candidates to run.
Term limits provide an avenue where the local people have a chance to offer fresh minds to the system. Bright minds and new ideas to help foster development. They bring to the table an unexploited potential (Vile, 2015). Elected officials who stay in power for long terms tend to relax, and become lazy forgetting the promises they made.
