For close to seven centuries England and Scotland lived in dispute over pieces of land. This disputed land by England and Scottish kings lied between Cheviots and Tweed. The land is still known as Debatable Land up to date. It is an exciting and serene place. The ambience that place brings, can be used as therapy for mental distress. The hush of the solitude hill is occasionally broken by the curlews’ cries and mountain’ tinkle from burns. There is appealing moorland in vicinity. This is not the only dispute. The bone of contention too lied in the succession battle. The succession battle to the throne intensified the enmity after the death of King Alexander III. Mind you, King Alexander had no heir to take over the crown. Two men were salivating over this seat. Bruce claimed he was the right person while Balliol family claimed he was the right. It was at this rivalry time when elders in Scotland called Kin Edward of England to help them elect a King. They elected Balliol a king of Scotland but he was overpowered by King Edward I. The enmity intensified further when King Edward I the Longshanks got himself crown in unscrupulous means. This is the person who became arch enemy to William Wallace.
King Edward I the Longshanks, English perceived him as one of the wisest and bravest of all kings they have ever had. He was tall and mighty who ruled with an iron fist. In contrary, Scottish perceived him as one of the most ruthless, unjust, cruel and greedy kings they had ever seen in throne. A Scottish rebel, William Wallace, a noble and humble person from Scotland, wanted to end the tyranny of King Edward I. William Wallace rose and led an attack on the leadership of King Edward I. He had anger boiling down in him when he saw what the Scottish people were going through under the rule of Longshanks. William Wallace had witnessed his father and brother die in battle in attempt to fight for the Scotland‘s freedom. You can imagine what went through his mind when his people died in attempt for liberation from the oppression. The time when they died, William Wallace was still very young. With assistance of Robert the Bruce, he resolved to begin his long battle to liberate Scotland. This is after he grew up. Wallace achieved this by mobilizing oppressed Scottish who were tired of mistreatment, to fight the English army. Interestingly, even the Scottish who had sworn an allegiance English King joined him in the amateur army. These amateur warriors fought fiercely and managed to defeat English army in several battles.
William Wallace lived with his father. His father was known as Malcom Wallace. He had an elder brother known as John. One day, Wallace’s brother and father were invited for a meeting some distance away from their home. They were surprised to find whole their kinsmen in the land of Scotland hanged. Scottish Men and women were deceived that the meeting was to discuss possible truce. This truce was to end the several disputes the Scotland had with England, only to be hanged. What a brutal death! This act enraged Malcom, Wallace’s father and his brother. “This cruel kings has massacred our clan’s people and we should let him continue this way,” Malcom groaned in anger as he addressed a group of men. “I second you Mr. Malcom”, Mr. Smith supports him. “We should do something now before he does something worse than what he has done,” Mr. Smith continued. Since Scotland lacked a leader to lead this those to independence, Malcom, his son John and other farmers vowed to fight English. The battle was between the clans of Wallace and English. Malcom led the rebel group to fight against the English King. Both Malcom and John alongside other people of their clan perished in tragic death in that battle. They did not survive. Wallace was observing all what was unfolding. Anger must have built in him, which he promised to take over the leadership of rebels in Scotland. After this horrific occurrence the dead bodies of Wallace father and brother were brought home and funeral arranged. Wallace’s uncle from Argyle attended the funeral where he meet with Wallace. Argyle was in battle with his father and Wallace’s father. Then he took him to live with him because Wallace had become an orphan. He taught Wallace war tactics and several other languages. “You have to be a warrior”, Argyle told Wallace he slowly tapped his shoulder. Wallace looked him while nodding and he replied, “Yes my uncle. Indeed I have to liberate my people from English bondage.” His uncle replied, “Go on my brave nephew. I will continue training on war tactics and how to make weapons. These are the tactics that you will train your army that will fight English army. I will teach you Latin language and several other important languages.” Wallace grew in uncle’s home. He became a grown up man full of wisdom and skills to live.
One day Wallace came across a girl he was familiar with. This is after his uncle had taken him back to his cradle home. He knew that girl when he was young before Argyle took him away to live with him. Her name was Murron. “How are you Murron?” Wallace greeted her excitedly. “I am very fine William,” she replied back while blushing. Her face flushed as she hugged him. “You have grown to a handsome man’’Murron noted. “Thank you. You have become a very beautiful woman too. Where have been living? Wallace continues with the conversation. “I didn’t move away. I have attended my school here in Scotland and now I have completed. Where have been since the time I met in your father’s burial? Murron asked. Looking distracted Wallace replied, “My uncle adopted me. I went to live with him. Now I have come back to look for you. I have a plan for you and me.” “Really? That is nice. I am pleased to see you again.” She replied shyly looking down to the ground. Murron was the girl who had given Wallace flower on his father’s burial. Her father was a rebel leader by that time they met with Wallace. For him to be in love with her, he was supposed to join the rebel group but that was not his plan by then. He wanted to settle down and have a peaceful marriage. In England, lords had authority to lie with brides who intended to marry. The law was made by the king that made it mandatory for the lords to consecrate that marriage of a new couple by sleeping with the bride. This was to be done on the night before the wedding. Wallace knew about this law, so he married his love of life, Murron secretly.
One day Murron got assaulted by one of the guard from England. The guard wanted to rape her. It was deliberate act to provoke Wallace because they knew he was a Scottish. Apparently, a man must protect his wife when she is attacked. This attack annoyed Wallace so much that he was prompted to kill the guard. Wallace caused a scene and commotion. A fight began where the lord killed Murron by slitting her throat. It is at this juncture Wallace became red out of anger and decided to revenge. The war of liberation had begun. He prepared other Scotsmen who entered the city killing any man from England on spot or within vicinity. Before they went to war, he trained them the tactics taught by his uncle. “Look here men, if we won’t stand up and say enough is enough, English people will slaughter all of us,” Wallace advised his men. “These people are beasts, they are cowards who do not deserve to live,” he continued to incite them. “I will lead you, train you and show you how we shall defeat them. How will show how we shall make good use of this terrain to defeat our enemies,” he encouraged them amidst of deafening applause from his men. Wallace declared himself a rebel leader from that moment. The meeting was held in the forest. The then, heir to the Scottish throne, wanted to have an agreement with King Edward I.
