Assisted Suicide Should Be Illegal
The promoters of assisted suicide argue that it is meant to end the suffering of terminally ill patients with no recovery hope. Some people claim that there should be dignity in dying and that patients should decide when to die, and assisted suicide should be legalized for that reason. I find this argument unethical for various reasons that form the basis of my submission that assisted suicide should be illegal.
The fabric of any society is measured by how best they treat the vulnerable in society. Legalizing assisted suicide would create a culture to kill not only the terminally ill but also other vulnerable people, such as people living with disabilities. Reports indicate that after the legalization of assisted suicide in Oregon, the number of people undergoing the procedure has increased by 380% (Smith & Myers, 2018). This points to the misuse of the procedure for other reasons, such as suicide. It should also be noted that some people have continued to live for several years after getting lethal drugs prescription.
It is therefore not clear if the lethal drugs prescriptions are accurate. According to Smith and Myers (2018), many patients opting for assisted do so for a lack of autonomy and not pain as the promoters would want others to believe. Therefore, it can be argued that assisted suicide is a way of escaping responsibility by patients' families who view terminally ill people as burdens and not a way of relieving the patients of pain.
