Introduction
Since 1776 when the United States of America attained her independence from the British government, numerous laws have been passed by both houses; the Congress and the Senate. These laws have been crafted to help improve the welfare of the United States citizens. Although there have been critics to every proposed or passed constitution amendments passed, the welfare of the people is always the main focus to this change.
This paper aims to look at the rights of the minority especially women and Afro Americans, and their pursuit to recognition as equal citizens just like any other United States of American citizen.
In the Twilight of Equality, there is a clear indication that people have been fighting to be recognized from a very long time. These people have been trying to liberate themselves through neoliberalism. It is said that this activism, that gave birth to neoliberalism of the mid 20th century. As companies made more profits, the welfare of the people was not given an after thought which made more begin the agitation for equal rights. Duggan (2004) has pointed out that neoliberalism was not confined to the United States of America alone; it was also present in the European continent. In addition, Fergusson (2006) notes that neoliberalism in the United States could be broken down into a different phase. The first one is the attacks on the New Deal Coalition on progressive unionism and general front. The second one revolved around the attacks on downwardly redistributive social movements that zeroed in on civil rights and Black power movements. Thirdly, was the pro business activism that took place in the 1970s following declining profits in the United States that affected the plight of poor, and the disadvantaged in the United States’ society. Furthermore, Wise (2005) says that there was a culture antagonism especially between blacks and the majority whites. Lastly, the emergence of multicultural, and calls for equality amongst all in the society.
On the other hand, Soudien (2013) illustrates the various stages that the minority groups in the United States of America passed through to realize recognition from the sitting government. The book demonstrates that this struggle began a long time ago, but calls for a change have been different across time. This means that people in the early 19th and early 20th century demanded different rights from those demanded in the mid 20th century when activism was at all time high. Hilmer (2012) has observed that while others demanded freedom, others in a different period were asking for equal opportunity rights. As Leora (2005) argues, the independence of African states in the 1960s motivated many minority groups in the United States of America to demand more rights and be treated in the same way as other Americans.
