Assignment #1: How can the efforts of the Temperance Movement and the U.S. response to alcohol be explained, at least in part, in terms of racial prejudice? Were there any similarities between the Temperance Movement efforts and those of state and local levels of government who sought to control opium use among the Chinese? Homework Assignments: 30% toward the student's grade. Each assignment is 10%. All homework assignment posts are due Sunday at 11:55pm ET. The assignments cover the material from the textbook(s) and the supplemental citations. Each assignment response needs to be 2-3 pages with APA 6th ed citations and references. Do Not Use MLA or any other form of referencing. All Assignments need to be uploaded as a Word Doc attachment as well. You also need 5-7 references, 5 is the minimum. Writing Expectations All written submissions should be submitted in a font and page set-up that is readable and neat. It is recommended that students try to adhere to a consistent format, which is described below. 1. Typewritten in double-spaced format with a readable style and font and submitted inside the electronic classroom (unless classroom access is not possible and other arrangements have been approved by the professor). 2. A 12-point font, Times New Roman, Aerial or Verdana fonts are good. 3. Page margins: Top, Bottom, Left Side and Right Side = 1 inch. Assignments All homework assignments must be written in an academic tone. You are not to write in the first person. Instead you need to use third person. Remember, an academic essay is not to be written like you are having a casual conversation with your friends. Do not include slang or foul language unless you are quoting someone. Large word-for-word quotes are not permitted. Direct quotes, if used, need to be only a sentence or two long. Instead, most cited material needs to be paraphrased. For more information on properly citing sources in your assignments, please refer to the APA 6th edition manual. While the assignments are to include an examination on current research of a particular problem, they also need to include the student’s careful and informed analysis of the problem. Each assignment post needs to be submitted as a Word Doc attachment. The student should download the assignment document and should follow the directions for each separate project. Each assignment should be completed and uploaded as an attachment to the professor in the student's Student Folder by the due date as a WORD DOC. Please submit these assignments as attachments and save them under your LastnameFirstname_assignment designation, i.e. assignment 1, assignment 2, or 3 (e.g., DoeJohn_assignmen1). Points will be deducted for failure to comply with these directions. Each assignment will need to include the following: 1. The original question at the top of the essay (serves as the abstract) and your name. 2. The body of your answer in several paragraphs (2-3 pages). 3. A titled reference section that has been formatted according to APA 6th edition style. A minimum of five (5) to seven (7) references per assignment. One reference can include the textbook. However, you will need to include several additional academic sources. These sources should consist of scholarly journals that have been peer reviewed and academically-based books. Web sources can be used, though they should come from credible sources such as government agencies, academics and private agencies with a strong reputation within the community that they serve. Furthermore, you will not be permitted to cite encyclopedias, dictionaries, newspapers (unless otherwise permitted) and popular magazines. It is important to remember that this is an upper-level class, and you are required to submit upper-level work, which is backed up by academically credible material. The temperance movement which was "also known as the prohibition movement of the 19th and the 20th centuries, was both a political and a social movement" (Oviatt library ,2013). The movement was an organized and combined effort mostly from the Protestants who were also known by the name "teetotallers" to encourage restraint in the sell and consumption of alcohol. Later on, the movement went ahead to call for "complete end of the sell of alcohol in the United States, across all levels; state and national" (Bonnie & Whitebread, n.d). This movement was majorly made up of women who had been left to suffer and experience difficulties with their children due to alcohol consumption among their husbands. Many of the social problems of the time such as unemployment, domestic violence among others, were attributed to alcohol consumption among the men. However, in many ways the temperance movement was racially discriminatory, "especially when considering the role of the black Americans and other races in the movement" (Lerner, 2009). Some aspects of racial prejudice are similar to those evident in the efforts of the state and local levels of government to control opium use among the Chinese in the 1870s.
To begin with, the temperance movement was racially discriminatory in terms of its membership. The movement initially was helped and grew through racism whereby other races except the whites were not allowed to join in the movement. White Georgians for instance, rejected and opposed the idea of having a mixture of the races the temperance movement and its organizations. This was done "discriminatively with the intention of preventing or getting on the way of the African Americans of joining the movement" (Fletcher, 2007). "This resulted in the African-American community being reluctant to support the movement" (Lee, 2011). The African American community however made efforts to "adopt the values of this movement later on so as to earn the whites’ respect" (Yacovone, 1988). This kind of racial prejudice is also evident in the efforts made by the government in the 1870s, when trying to control the use of opium among the Chinese. In these efforts for instance, the laws and the efforts to control opium were majorly necessary because the federal government to control or limit the whites association with the Chinese. This is because, the use of opium among the white population had gone high whereby some whites including women had started going to the Chinese opium parlours. This continued association with the Chinese was among the key factors that drove the government’s efforts to control opium.
Other instances of racial prejudice in the temperance movement include instances whereby the whites, especially the Georgians, were in support of illegalizing alcoholic beverages among the African Americans. This was also, a move that was racially motivated and was, therefore, prejudicial to the Africans. Similar traces of racial discrimination are evident in the efforts by the government while trying to control the use of opium among the Chinese.
