The ultimate goal of the Fourth Amendment protections is to provide people with protection against unlawful seizures and searches by the police. These are critical rights that are shared with the majority of the Americans. There are two schools of thinking on the approach to the law, one arguing that it is a “support of individual rights.” The law seeks to make sure that the right to privacy in their houses, effects, papers, and persons are safeguarded against unreasonable seizures and searches. Warrant of searches can only be issued when there is a probable cause (LaFave, 2013). It is critical to note that the Fourth Amendment protects an individual against the government and not private citizens. A security guard in a residential area can search the home without a warrant, unlike the police. In essence, the law seeks to support the rights of individuals in the society.
On the other hand, the school of thought that the Forth Amendment aims at supporting the rule of law seems reasonable. The law protects the government from intruding into the homes of individuals since they may take the advantage and harass people (Lens, 2008).
