Warren Buffett is a great businessman and an investment guru to be emulated. His achievements can be articulated to his great leadership styles that he shows. Warren is also a humble, patient and a frugal leader who stands by his convictions. Dating back to his early life, Warren showed great aptitude for money and business; His desire and determination to work for money and starting businesses had started manifesting. At the age of six, Warren had already ventured into the world of business. This was contrary to his age mates who would be playing then. At this tender age, he would buy six-packs of coca cola at the cost of twenty five cents from his grandfather’s grocery only to resell each for a nickel a move that would earn him a five cents profit (Warren, 2014)
His father being a stockbroker, warren would visit his brokerage shop where he got his interests in the stocks market. At the age of eleven, Warren invested in shares which were his first investment venture. Warren bought three shares of Cities Services which at the time were preferred at $38 per share. He later sold the shares at $40 per share a decision he would later regret after the Cities Services shares escalated to $200 per share. He would later cite this wrong move in the need to have patience in investing (Warren, 2014). Apart from the stocks market, Warren was also an entrepreneur in the making. At the age of 13, warren had his own business working as a newspaper boy a task that earned him $5000 and selling horseracing tip sheets (Joshua, 2014).
At Woodrow Wilson High School, Warren and his friends invested in pinball machines where Warren owned three of them. This investment earned him $1200 after selling the business. After high school, Warren saw no need of persuading to college. He enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania in the Wharton school of business but left after two years when he felt that his professors were not giving him enough. He transferred to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and later finished his school at Columbia after being denied admission at the Harvard University (Joshua, 2014).
Warren’s great success in business is attached to Berkshire Hathaway Company where he is the CEO and also rated as the largest shareholder in the company. His other achievements can be seen in his investments in the Nebraska furniture mart, his huge number of shares in the coca cola company and his venture into the one time shaky GEICO Company which he was able to turn its fortunes around. His achievement records can be attributed to some factors and his leadership styles.
In his first leadership style, Warren looks for intelligence, energy and also integrity in the job (Jones, 2013).He also believes in hiring the right people with the needed talents in the business and then getting out of their way giving them space to deliver the needed results. He believes that the managements’ biggest task is identifying the talents within the company and also in planning the succession plans for the company. Therefore, he identifies the need to make good choices when hiring and standing fully behind your choices (Warren, 2014).
