The battle on drugs has been in existence since time and memorial. The expensive war has made nations utilize a lot of resources in catching buyers and sellers of illegal drugs in the black market. The costs of the management of drugs have been observed to be more exaggerated with the marijuana. It's less harmful nature enhances the exorbitant prices on controlling the flow of marijuana compared to tobacco and cocaine (Swift, 2013). Additionally, the battle on drugs like the cannabis are also facilitated by the lack of the government collecting taxes over illegal markets. Therefore, governments need to legalize marijuana use and sales to avoid its detriments in people’s health as well as the failure of the country to benefit from its use. To solve all the problems that come with the illegal use of marijuana, it is necessary for legalization schemes to be put in place to control utilization patterns in the state. Therefore, it is for the Federal Government to re-think over criminalization of the drug and legalize it (Cerdá et al., 2012).
The legalization of marijuana is necessary since states have legalized the most harmful drugs such as cigarettes and alcohol. The assessment of destructive nature of drugs by the UK government in 2010 exposes the harm that comes with use of alcohol and tobacco as compared to marijuana as illustrated in the figure below. The use of pot in smoking marijuana has made it be perceived as a lethal drug (Kamin, 2012). Moreover, being that the drug is considered illegal in America and other nations, has made a small number of people ready to break the law to make use of the item. Therefore, the law breakers by use of the drug are perceived to belong to the ‘pothead’ culture. To do away with this group that falls into offense due to consumption of marijuana, it is important to legalize cannabis (Hathaway et al., 2007).
