Police-Minority Relations
Introduction
Police-minority relation is the act of coordinating and helping each other between the two parties in question. The fact of the matter is such events have been met with a lot of challenges, but it cannot be ignored that challenges are being put into consideration. Significantly, this paper enumerates in detail on the police-minority relation on the basis of what can be undertaken to better the relation. Furthermore, the illustration is made on whether the relation has been mixed, negative or positive.
Has the history been positive, negative or mixed? Why?
From a historical point of view, police-minority relation has been troubled because of the enforcement of laws that have discriminated against the minority groups. The problems have been most challenging within the African Americans where practices of slavery, segregation and discrimination have played a huge role among police-minority relations (Guy, Fany & Shlomo, 2012). The height of the problem between the police and the minority relation was noted in the q960 where the civil rights movement and the protestors gathered to demonstrate but the response from the police was brutal as tension had increased between the two groups (Christopher, 2012). But as time went by, there has been the creation of police organizations meant to bring the police and the minority into a more mutual relationship.
The strategies undertaken include hiring more police minorities and women son as to counter possible challenges that are facing the two groups. According to a research undertaken by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (1996), 26% of African Americans surveyed reported that they had little or no confidence in the police compared to the 9 percent of white respondents. There is also the concern that police officers are profiling the minority group on the perspective of race, hence, an indication that the relationship between the two is not fully practiced. Significantly, the above enumeration show that the relation between police and minority groups has been a mixed reaction as there has been some good event and bad events in all circumstances (Sprott & Doob, 2014). The rationale is based on the perspective that not all people are satisfied while other are satisfied as not from the above statistics.
Steps that can be practiced to improve police-minority relations
From the above paragraphs, it is apparent that there has been a mixed reaction on the issue of police-minority relation, hence, the rationale for steps that can be utilized to counter the situation. The primary steps that can be considered in this perspective are:
Ban racial profiling
Removal of racial profiling and police brutality is another step that can be initiated so as to build a relationship between the minority and the police as it contribute to better ways of solving a dispute (Guy & Fany, 2012).
Building the community before enforcing law
The step in this case entails being in contact with the residents so as to build trust with them through interacting with them as a way of finding more about them. The approach is essential as it aims at creating a form of understanding, and ultimately get rid of mixed and negative reaction between the police and the minority groups (Harpaz & Herzog, 2013).
Recruiting of more racial groups
The step in question entails recruiting more colored people so as to enumerate to them that they are cared for and they are trusted in terms of leading. Significantly, having balance in police recruit will significantly create a positive relation between the police and the minority as there will be a form of understanding between the two parties, especially if associated with respect (Guy et al., 2012).
