The nineteen seventies basically refer to a very fascinating period in history. Historians have shown that the time in question brought a lot of change in the world history. The Americans were completely disillusioned with the government of the day and their domestic institutions. Increase in drug use increased significantly in this period also. After a vigorous campaign, President Ronald Reagan was committed to reducing not only the size of the government but also taxes.
Richard Nixon who was the 37th president of the United States resigned. He served from the year 1969 all the way to 1974. Before becoming president, Nixon had held other high profile government positions such as the United States representative, senator for California as well as the 36th president of United States of America. The resignation was motivated by the Watergate scandal that involved illegitimate snooping by his workers which mainly focused on political rivals. All this led to the collapse of the political support that Nixon enjoyed in congress. Immediately after he resigned on august 9th 1794, members of his staff gathered in the white house to bid farewell to their boss whom they served for more than five years. As far as his remarks are concerned, he asked his staff to serve the incoming president just like they served him and those who came before him. He reiterated that the office can only be as excellent as the people who work hard for the president. He continued to say that the white house was greater that many of the world’s state houses not because it was big in terms of size or expensive paintings but because the people who worked there had the heart to serve. He did not forget to express how proud he was of his cabinet as well as all the members who served in his government. The inauguration of Gerald ford as the 38th president of United States took place on august 9 1974. He was the next president after the resignation of Richard Nixon. Before Nixon resigned, ford way his vice president. The oath was administered to ford by warren burger who was the chief justice at the time. This was carried out in the east room of the Whitehouse. Congress had accused Nixon of obstruction of justice as the investigations of the Watergate scandal was going on. Tape recordings from state house exposed the fact that the former president Nixon as indeed aware and might have given permission for the illegal wire-tapping of democratic national committee offices which were strategically situated in the Watergate hotel in Washington dc. Instead of facing impeachment as well as impeding removal from office, President Nixon decided to resign on august 8th 1974. Since there was no historical or legal guidelines as far as Nixon’s accusation was concerned, ford, who took over as president opted to grant Nixon a full pardon for all offenses against the United States. He did this so as to put tragic as well as disruptive scandal behind all those who were implicated. Ford defended his decision to pardon former president Nixon by saying that the long trial would only serve to polarize the American public. His decision was highly criticized by the American people and is believed to be one of the major factors that led to his failure to secure a win in the 1976 elections. On April 3rd President Gerald ford announced an operation called operation baby life to try and evacuate 2000 orphans from Vietnam. One of the planes was involved in the dangerous operation, unfortunately crashed. Consequently, 155 passengers and crew died. This tragedy reduced to a great extent the morale of the American citizens. The success of the conservatism in the late 1970s and early 1980s was closely connected to the rise of the new religious right. The term religious right simply talks about a set of companies that surfaced in the late 1970s. Their readers comprised of pat Robertson, jerry falwell among others. Through this movement, they made a huge religiously founded conventional petition. The new religious right took characteristically stands that were conservative in nature in all matters but its idiosyncratic underscore was a moral traditionalism.
