Application of metal complexes
Biomolecules such as proteins and DNA have some metal binding sites leading to their reaction with coordinating compounds which can lead to either toxic or beneficial effects. Therefore, metal ions and compounds serve in oxygen transport as seen in the iron complex in red blood cells; metal ions are essential in forming biocatalysts as well as being used in controlled toxicity applications in medicine.
Gold compounds are applied in the treatment of arthritis. The specific types of arthritis that gold compounds can treat are rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. Gold works best in the early stages of arthritis development but can also be effective in active joint swelling and pain with the ability to prevent joint disability and damage. Therefore, the gold compounds are considered to be a class of RA drugs called Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (Bertrand and Casini, 2014)
Bismuth compounds are also used to heal complications. Bismuth subsalicylate is used to treat heartburn, stomach upset, and nausea. In addition to that, Bismuth subsalicylate is used to treat diarrhea by slowing down the growth of diarrhea causing bacteria. Bismuth subsalicylate can also be used to treat ulcers of the stomach caused by Helicobacter pylori, but the compound is only used under medical prescription because salicylates can cause serious problems of bleeding when used alone in ulcer patients. Bismuth subsalicylate medication may react with other medications such as chloroquine and tetracycline treatments preventing their full absorption by the body (Mjos and Orvig, 20114). Therefore, taking of Bismuth subsalicylate should be properly scheduled by the qualified medical practitioner.
Silver compounds are used for the protection of wounds. Nanocrystalline silver products also known as Acticoat are applied for the protection of wounds. Silver- impregnated wounds found in wound dressings release small concentrations of silver ions continuously which react with chlorides in the wound exudates forming silver chloride. Therefore, Acticoat is highly effective against wound pathogens leading to its use in covering over skin grafts because of its best antibiotic activity (Mjos and Orvig, 20114). Nanocrystalline silver alters events of wound inflammation facilitating wound healing in early stages.
Titanocene dichloride and budotitane are titanium IV complexes which are used to manifest anti-tumor effects and bring down the toxicity of various cancer cells, but the unfortunate part is that the Titanocene dichloride and budotitane are unstable in water. Platinum complexes are currently used to treat cancer. Cisplatin, oxaliplatin, and carboplatin; platinum complexes have been approved worldwide as cancer chemotherapy effective complexes. Japan South Korea and China have approved nedaplatin, nedaplatin, and lobaplatin as effective cancer chemotherapy agents. Platinum complex drugs target DNA and some proteins, particularly those which transport copper. Platinum IV complexes have a stubby d6 configuration which makes them act in the capacity of pro-drugs with an ability of being reduced by irradiation to form active platinum II complexes in c...
