Introduction
More emphasis has been centered on the impacts of climate alteration on forests, farmlands, freshwater bodies and the economy. The question that I keep asking myself is; what about our oceans? Even with its large capacity to engross high temperatures and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the physical effects of climate modification on oceans are now very eminent and dramatic. In line with the findings of the American Meteorological Society (2013), temperatures in shallow parts of oceans rose by 0.10C every decade between 1970 and 2010. In this essay, we shall analyze five major ways in which temperatures are influencing oceans around the world.
Body
Coral bleaching. From the 90s, coral reef professionals established that huge coral bleaching activities seen during the 1980’s were because of anomalously heat changes associated with climate alteration (Robin & Clive, 2012). Mass coral bleaching leads to starvation, decline, and death of ocean corals, which support many species living on coral reefs.
Migration of Fish. Additionally, Robin & Clive (2012), state that many fish species have migrated towards the poles due to ocean warming, affecting fisheries all over the world.
Drowning wetlands. The ever-rising ocean levels, partially the effect of temperatures absorbed by water bodies, is also “drowning” wetlands (American Meteorological Society, 2013). These areas typically enlarge vertically quick to accommodate the rising ocean levels, but lately, oceans have been rising more swiftly for wetlands to maintain their edges above the waters. On top of this, coral reefs and grass meadows are also likely to drown because they can only carry out photosynthesis in moderately shallow waters.
Ocean Acidification. According to research carried out by the Royal Society, oceans have absorbed 30% of the Carbon Dioxide released into the atmosphere since the evolution of Industrial Revolution (2005). Nevertheless, this generous service that has considerably reduced global warming, has been achieved at great price: the drift in ocean acidification is nearly 30 times more than natural difference, and mean surface ocean Ph, the average measure of acidity, has decreased by 0.1 units- a highly substantial upsurge in acidity (The Royal Society, 2005). This is harming many ocean species, which rely on Calcium Carbonate in forming skeletons and shells. Further research has indicated that Calcium Carbonate establishment is interrupted when water becomes more acidic. Acidification of oceans also seems to be disrupting whole ecosystems, for instance, coral reefs that rely on the fabrication of Calcium Carbonate to construct reef structure that in turn act as habitats for many reef organisms.
A catastrophic positive Feedback Circle. Lastly, acidification of oceans also seems to be decreasing ...
