The topic "food insecurity among immigrants in the United States of America" is a very wide topic. It should be narrowed down to a specific demographic group. An excellent demographic group would be young immigrant children under the age of five. Young children are very vulnerable to food insecurity since it is a leading contributor of malnutrition and infant mortality. Statistics show that one in every four children under the age of three years lives in an immigrant family with at least one parent born outside the United States. Children born to immigrant parents are more vulnerable to food insecurity than children born to native parents. Children born to parents with low levels of English proficiency and those born to newly arrived immigrants are the group that is most likely to face food insecurity.
The majority of toddlers and infants born to immigrant parents are eligible for federal assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program since they are citizens of the United States by virtue of birth. However, immigrant parents do not seek assistance due to fear of the system. Nutrition programs should be established to link families to food assistance programs. Good health in the early stages of life is essential for the foundation of children’s learning, behavior, and health.
