Gay men can procreate: a fact or farce
Far more often than not when the issue of homosexuality crops up in any reasonable conversation, the debate that would tend to infiltrate the conversation would be the legal and moral aspect of the behavior. Netherlands, being the first nation in the world to officiate the first same sex marriage set up a new precedent that re-defined the institution of marriage. The United States of America has not been left behind in the trend, its thirty two states have legalized such kind of marriages and also the apex court has set new-case precedent that permits homosexuality. Further, federal statutes that initially prohibited same sex marriages or sexual intercourse for people belonging to same sex have been brought down.
Ideally, most of the strongest critiques of homosexuality have been using the argument that homosexuals are incapable of procreating thus killing the very purpose and the intention of the institution of marriage. Narrowing down, any right thinking member of the society when asked about whether gay men can get pregnant the answer would be a big resounding no. However, latest development in the medical field has proven otherwise. Ignore the trending story of Thomas Beatie, the first man to get pregnant. As a transgender he had taken in some hormonal chemicals that enabled him to change his gender from being female to male (Silver, 2008).
The surprising thing, in fact the miracle of contemporary science is that currently it is possible for gay men to produce an egg and also carry pregnancy like the female counterpart. The ground breaking researches were conducted by two different institutions; the Kyoto University Institute for Integrated Cell Material Sciences and on the other hand by RYT hospital-Dwayne Medical Centre. The research conducted by Kyoto University found that gay men, who are desirous in procreating, can do so without seeking the donation of an egg from a female person. Rather stem cells obtained from the gay partner are used to produce eggs.
The stem cells are normally sourced from the skin; the stem cells used in this context are the pluripotent cells which are different from the usual ones which are primarily found in the embryo. The pluripotent cells can also be sourced from the mice skin cells. The case study used mice, the sperm and egg were obtained from a stem cell of a mouse; the biological engineered eggs were fertilized with sperm through a process called in-vitro fertilization (Donahue, 2012). The mice produced were given a clean bill of health. The same process is applicable to human beings and a ground breaking for gay people.
The second research conducted by RYT-Dwayne Medical Center hospital was able to fill the gaps by Kyoto University. The Kyoto research was silent on the possibility of whether a man could carry pregnancy rather they addressed the feasibility of eggs being obtained ...
