Poverty can be defined as the state of lacking life essentials such as food, clothing, shelter, water, and money. With the modern economy facing a recession and decline, more and more people are experiencing the effects of poverty. A decline in the world economy has resulted to inflation in basic services and goods. Poverty can be described as a complex phenomenon. Poverty is caused by different factors that work together resulting to inadequate resources. This essay discusses poverty in the world. The essay also discusses causes of poverty, effects of poverty in the world and offers recommendation on how poverty can be eradicated.
Poverty is caused by many factors. There are two types of factors causing poverty, which are individual factors and aggregate factors. The individual factors explain individual circumstances that lead to poverty (Banerjee & Duflo, 2011). For example, poverty around the world is caused by lack of enough experience, education, skills and intelligence to lead a good life. Other individual circumstances that lead to poverty include age, handicaps, and health. Other individual factors include racial and sexual discrimination, poverty culture and work orientation. Aggregate factors explain poverty in general economy problems. For example, aggregate factors leading to poverty include low national income and fewer employment opportunities in the less developed countries.
There are other acute causes of poverty, which are agricultural cycles, warfare, natural disasters, droughts and flooding. Warfare is a major cause of poverty, with human and material destruction caused by war affecting the development of the involved countries. The destruction leads to a drop in the average income. The destruction could also affect the provision of social services and infrastructure, which proves hard to recover. Poverty is also caused by agricultural cycles, with the subsistence farmers being the most affected. The production of food goes through different cycles of scarcity and abundance. Families that rely solely on subsistence food for survival usually go through hungry periods prior to harvest. In case of bad climate and thus poor harvest, poverty finds its way in the society. Natural disasters are also a main cause of poverty, where disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes have affected communities all over the world (Banerjee & Duflo, 2011). The developing countries are the most affected because their limited resources are used in redeveloping the affected areas. Environmental forces such as droughts and floods destroy plants and livestock, which leave the affected communities in acute crisis.
Poverty has many effects on societies in the whole world. Poverty interrupts the normal growth of a child. Children from poor backgrounds perform poorly in education. The main reason behind the poor performances by poor students is because these students cannot learn on a hungry stomach. Another major effect of poverty is illness and early deaths. Poor people in the society cannot access health and medical facilities. Their poor eating methods also put them at risk of contracting different illnesses (Banerjee & Duflo, 2011). There are also high chances of poor children suffering from chronic illnesses. Another effect of poverty is that it makes people live in bad housing facilities, which affects their mental and physical health. Poverty also leads to increased violence and terror activities in the community. Limited resources will lead to unequal distribution, which will lead to violence. In most cases, terrorists come from poor societies with high levels of unemployment.
However, if the whole world works together, they can help to eradicate poverty. Although it would be hard to completely remove poverty in the modern world, different measures can be used to bring poverty levels down. Different national governments across the world can come with measures that can be used to alleviate vulnerability and food insecurity issues.
