Dissociation is a mental process that in most cases results to one lacking connection in memories, thoughts, actions, feelings or sense of identity. If a person is dissociated some information in the brain is not associated with other information as it should be in the normal case. Normally people associate dissociation with a mental disorder, but there are some benefits that can come about with this disorder.
What are the positive aspects of dissociation as phenomena?
Dissociation can be used by kids to get out of an extremely adverse situation or conditions that may cause acute emotional, physical and psychological pain. In this case, the memories, thought and feelings of the traumatic event are psychologically put off in order to allow the child to just function in a normal way. Ideally, these phenomena can be used by the child as a defense mechanism. As well it can be used as a survival mechanism since it can be used by people that are facing hopelessness to preserve some area that provide hope.
What examples of dissociation can you cite that occur in "normal" life or in the news, or other media, i.e., literature, movies?
Dissociation is common phenomenons in life and many people experience this in their daily life. Here are some of the examples of dissociation.
* Highway hypnosis, this is where you daydream in a car that it is on autopilot.
* Missing part of a conversation because you blanked out.
* Looking at the mirror and feeling unfair
* Feeling like time is slowing down.
