Abstract
The research establishes the current water supply system in Los Angeles by considering aspects such as the current demand, population of the city and the cost of water. The study indicates that the population of the city increases annually, hence an increase in the demand for water. The existing water area for the city is 88.23 square kilometres, against an estimated population of 4,304,855 and an average daily water consumption of 295.62 litres per person, at a cost of $67.07 for 50 gallons. The results indicate that the current water supply system poses danger both to the consumers and the environment, since most of the waters contain toxic impurities. Chlorination of the waters to not totally eliminate the harmful substances, hence a more sustainable system should be set up. The research considered sea water as an alternative for use in domestic systems. Sea water for toilet flushing reduces the harm on aquatic life, and reduces the demand for fresh water. The sea water system do not require extensive treatment process, hence reduces the overall cost of supplying water to the households. However, the research suggests further studies to extensively establish the environmental and economic impact of installing systems for the supply of sea water in Los Angeles.
