Canada is one of the most developed countries in the world consisting of three territories and ten provinces. The country is found on the northern part of North America extending from the Atlantic Ocean towards the Pacific Ocean and then to the northern parts of the Arctic Ocean. It covers 3.85 million square miles, an estimated 9.98 million square kilometres, thus making it the fourth-largest country in terms of land mass and second largest in terms of total area (Petramala & Gulati, 2013).
Various indigenous communities have over the years inhabited Canada. Canada was first occupied by the French and British colonies. However, various conflicts among these colonies led to the rise of the United Kingdom that comprises of the Canada that is present today. In 1867, three colonies joined and formed the Federal Dominion of Canada that consequently led to the formation of provinces and territories. Canada obtained its full independence from Britain in 1982 after the Canada Act disconnected the remnants of independence in the British Parliament (Petramala & Gulati, 2013)t. The system of government in Canada is a constitutional monarchy and a federal democracy. The country is led by Queen Elizabeth II and is among the most multicultural and ethnically diverse countries of the world. The economy of Canada is also one of the largest with natural resources and international trade being attributed to its success.
The population of the U.S is nine times more than That of Canada. As to the census of 2011, Canada had a population of 35.3 million while the United States had a population of 317 million (Petramala & Gulati, 2013). On the per capita income, the U.S has a higher per capita income and wealth than Canadians. In 2013, the average disposable income in Canada was $26888 and $35,950 in the United States (Petramala & Gulati, 2013). These and other details can be represented in the table as follows:
Despite Canada being heavily involved in international trade, the United States of America is Canada’s most important trade partner. Some of the major trade commodities between Canada and the U.S are agricultural products and energy. In 2013, U.S imported goods from Canada worth $332.1 billion that represented a 2.5% increase from 2012. Oil was the major import from Canada with crude and natural gas estimated to be $109.4 billion, vehicles worth 55.7 billion and machinery at $ 19.8 billion (Petramala & Gulati, 2013).
