The first known relationship theory was formulated in 1973 by psychologists Dalmas Tylor and Irwin Altman and used to explain the affection and connection between two people. In the creation of a dating website, understanding the theories of relationship can be a critical factor in determining whether a relationship will succeed or fail.
First, an online dating sites should advise its members to be friends or acquaintances rather than lovers. One of the reasons why online dating fail is because many of the couple enter into online dating with high expectations like long term commitment, serious relationships or even marriage without any expectation of a failed relationship. The result is disappointment and failure in many relationship. The sexual configurations theory, opposite sexes are attracted to each not necessarily for love but by lust where many people fantasize the idea of a casual encounter. When a person enters into a relationship thinking of an serious relationship, they are likely to get disappointed since the other party must thinking that the relationship is just for fun.
Online dating is one of the latest and unsuccessful innovations in relationships and has not been able to achieve its objectives due to the challenges of disappointment and non-commitment (Santore, 2008, p. 10). An online dating site should have a counseling department where new members are taken through an orientation session on what to expect and the possibility of disappointment. Dealing with depression from an heartbreak can be challenging with records of people committing suicide as a result for a failed relationship. Counseling would help many people to accept the fact that an online relationship may not work for many reasons with the main fact being that majority of online dating site users are pure jokers with no intention of commitment.
Relying on the explanations of Durkheimian interpretations of individualism, modernity and social solidarity, the third recommendation would be that dating website should be responsive to the cultural inclinations of the members. In a social setting, a lady with many failed relationships will be judged as promiscuous, with the society taking harsh stands on such women (Van Anders, 2015, p. 21). To counter this cultural standards, a dating website should allow members to use proxy names to ensure their real identity are only visible to other members and not guests on the platform. It would encourage members especially, women to enjoy the adventure of such relationships without having to worry about the harsh standards imposed to them by the society.
