Self-concept and Perception
Self-concept is the image that we have of ourselves. This image develops in several ways but is particularly influenced by our interactions with important people in our lives. “The individual self” consists of attributes and personality traits that differentiate us from individuals. “The relational self” is defined by our relationships with significant others. And the “collective self” reflects our membership in social groups.
Self-concept is generally thought of as our individual perceptions of our behaviors, abilities, and our unique characteristics. It is essentially a mental picture of who you are as a person (Cherry,2017). There are three various parts of the self- concept (Rogers,1959). Self-image is how we see ourselves. Self-esteem is how much you value yourself. And ideal-self is how you wish you could be.
The role that self-concept plays in ethical communication is our self-concept; our gender, identity, sexual identity and racial identity are traits that we understand about ourselves. Your self-concept can change on a regular basis because you see and interpret things differently depending on your feelings, beliefs, and attitudes. Self-awareness is a two-way process as your feelings and beliefs affect your self-concept. Awareness means becoming aware of what is true about yourself and this is important because you probably believe you are as you see yourself, but others may see you differently. self-concept is understanding the characteristics that you have. Are you sociable, shy, or confident? Are you tall, fat, or handsome? Are you happy? Do you make good decisions? What makes you, you? Understanding who you are is complex. Its not easy. The idea that you have and your attitude towards your idea of who and what you are develops your self-esteem. By changing your attitude, mood, values and beliefs you can improve your self-esteem. You learn more about the best parts of your character and being and appreciate who you are more. You become more self-confident.
