This paper attempts to answer the question, ‘what are the social stigmas that are associated with mental health, and how can we dispel them to reduce barrers for treatment engagement?’ Mental health involves cognitive, emotional, and moral well-being. It can affect day-to-day dealings, work routines, efficiency, relationships, and life as a whole. As people experiencing a decline in their mental health are increasing every day, medical science and psychology have helped in explaining the causes associated with mental health stigma and hurdles in delivering the treatment. The paper discusses that the stigma and its types. It further goes on, to explain that social stigma not only exacerbates mental illness but also prevents many individuals from seeking medical advice. Social stigma, its causes, and its effects have been discussed at length. It further discusses the role of social stigma in exacerbating mental illness and preventing individuals from getting treatment. It also explains few possible solutions to the social stigma that prevents mentally ill individuals from seeking help.
