The adult I interviewed is my grandmother she is 65 years old. From the interview I learned a few things in relation to human development and theories.
Early Childhood (age 3-7)
* At what age were you able to draw recognizable images?
She said that at 6 years of age she could draw because of how her parents kept congratulating her about the drawings. This reminded me of Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development CITATION SAG19 \l 2057 (SAGE, 2019). The preschool stage, where a child’s confidence and initiative grows with the positive endorsement.
* When did you join school and what age were you?
She joined school at the age of 7 years. Her parents reached this decision when she could successfully carry out instructions. Just like Erikson had put in his theory of psychosocial development in the school age.
Middle Childhood (age 6-8)
* When did you make your first best friend and what sort of things did you teach each other?
She said her first best friend was made at school in kindergarten they played together and they would teach other drawing and reading. It makes sense according to Freud’s psychosexual stages of development. In the latent stage at age 6-11 a child has developed social skills and relationship building with peers.
* Have you ever been bullied or have you ever bullied someone? If yes, why were you bullied or why did you bully?
She said that has ever bullied someone but at the early pre-teen years. She was trying to force some girl to play the way she does. I believe this happened because of the cognitive development of Piaget when trying to adapt she may have forced things thus it came out as bullying.
* Were you by any chance a popular kid in school? Why or why not
She said she was not popular because she was not into the popular co-curricular activities in school. At this stage still children become friends with people who share their interest, they don’t people’s differences kindly.
Adolescence (between ages 10-19)
* Is there an instance that you made a rush decision? Why?
She said there is a time she decided in anger to go stay with her grandmother on the farm because she her mother had forbade her from going to a school party. Without thinking about school and other essential things. This instance confirms Erikson’s theory, it states that in this stage people still don’t understand themselves and often leads to rush decision making.
* Did you ever make a decision based on your emotions? What was the outcome?
She said there is a time she was very excited about passing her exams and in that time she took a drug. The outcome was that she had to go for counselling and her grades dropped. I believe this happened in accordance to her social environment, apart from the fact that an adolescent’s emotions area always running high.
Emerging Adulthood (age 18-29)
* As a young adult, were you close to your parents? Why or why not?
She said she was close to her parents as a young adult because they agreed on most of the things and those they did not agree on, they let them be. According to Erikson’s theory this stage is about emotional connection with family and friends CITATION SAG15 \l 2057 (SAGE, Theories of Human Development, 2015). It explains my grandmother’s relationships with their parents.
* When did you move out of your parent’s house?
She moved out at the age of 22 years, because she had gotten a job far from home. Young adults often crave for independence but parents still remain to be crucial. Many emerging adults still live at home depending on what nation they are living in. This is not dependent on their closeness with their parents. It is a moment of instability one may need to change their residence to explore themselves.
* Did they still support you financially? What is you feeling about it?
She said her parents kept supporting her for 4 years after leaving home, by that time she was stable enough. She felt loved and cared for. In some countries like America parents provide help to their young adults’ children because of various reasons including that parents are more stable with income and it is only fair to supp
