Introduction
Thomas Merton lived between the years 1915 and 1968. He was a great Catholic writer during his stay in America and his writings focused mainly on social justice and spirituality. Bigotry is an act of being intolerant to someone who has his proposal. Bigotry can occur in different ways depending on the group that the idea or plan is targeting. There can be cultural prejudice, gender or ethnicity but our focus today is on religious bigotry. Religious intolerance started a long time ago in European countries, and the outcome of this bigotry is as discussed below.
Religious intolerance was associated with, persecution, discrimination and abusing of other people’s rights and freedom especially the minority group. It comes when a particular group of religion starts to accuse their friends in the other religion of doing something they should are not supposed to do when referring to their holy writings. Most people use different scriptures in their religious books to condemn the other group of religion especially when they are big in numbers. A case example is that Christians are persecuted in Muslims countries because they believe in Christ. Muslims believe that Jesus Christ does not exist but only Allah. As a result of this, rights of Christians are always abused in these countries and also freedom of worship is limited to public places. When one done is done with his ambition, the happiness follows, and this was seen when one group of religion tries to fight out the other to regain happiness.
Religious bigotry also results in violence. Violence takes in different forms including harassing the minority group members and the assassination of great people spearheading the idea of prejudice. A group of religion plans violence against the other to eliminate them and in the event where there is resistance from the two groups violence erupts. The effects of violence are worst and can lead to loss of properties and or even death to a greater extent. The concept of violence is due to hatred that may be due to wrong interpretation of their holy books. Some religion argues that that you should not associate with other groups of people because their holy book says so.
