Ethical Egoism versus Utilitarianism
In this paper, I will provide arguments that are proponent to why I reject Ethical Egoism and support Utilitarianism. Personally, I consider true happiness to be, that which brings contempt among as many people as possible as opposed to a few individuals. For Ethical Egoism, the right action or position ought to be the one, which brings maximum self-satisfaction possible. On the contrary, the philosophy of Utilitarianism suggests that an action or doctrine that is right has to be useful to a majority of people.
I do prefer the philosophy of Utilitarianism to that of Ethical Egoism for the main reason that humans are social beings, and they need each other for mutual survival. Everyone needs help in one way or the other. Logic provides that collective satisfaction brings about contempt. It is important that all human beings be cautious about the well-being of others. They should always take positions that would promote happiness for the greatest number of people. Such positions are not only ethical and logical, but also helpful to the majority of the people.
Moreover, a contented society leads to better livelihood among many people. The philosophy of utilitarianism is supportive of selflessness among individuals. Selflessness is an acceptable virtue among all persons of all religions, races, gender, and social classes. The virtue gives a person the feeling of kindness, sympathy, and empathy towards others. It is common knowledge that it is only right for one to be considerate of the feelings of other people.
The philosophy of Ethical Egoism suggests that the right positions should be in favor of one’s self-interest. However, self-interests are at times illegal and punishable by law. On the other hand, the doctrine of Utilitarianism suggests that an action is morally right if its repercussions lead to happiness to the majority of the population and vice versa. Such actions are usually legal and commendable in the society. For instance, if a political leader is mandated to provide services and economic support to his or her subjects, it is more self-satisfying to favor his or her family members at the expense of the rest of the population. It is equally more self-satisfactory to get a larger portion of community resources and use them for personal gains. Such actions are illegal and unacceptable, a factor that makes them illogical and inappropriate.
