Every child must feel safe whether at home or in the school. Bullying is an abnormal way of reaction in the children stage of growth. The behavior of bullying, usually after it has developed in children, it gets worse as time goes and becomes difficult to remove. Therefore, needs to handle directly this is a problem while the children are growing up. To stop this kind of a cruel conduct, all the adults must support every child who seeks their help by responding immediately and undertaking preventive measures to stop the behavior from happening in the present time and consequently in future. Adults must be cognizant of the bullying problem in children as this is the first step to deal with this menace (Orpinas, 2006).
Bullying does not only refer to physical actions like hitting, pushing or punching; it also includes psychological torture, verbal or cyber bullying and social exclusion of an individual. All the types have got more or less similar impacts on the victim. Aggression actions like roughhousing or fighting are a subclass of bullying, and often constitute bullying when they take place within a relationship where children involved notice that there is a power variance. The action of bullying targeted at children who are perceived to have some power and the bullying is purposely intended to reduce the perceived power over a given situation or to hurt the victim deliberately. Though, when such behaviors committed as a reaction to a previous occurrence, they are not considered as bullies (Carpenter, 2009).
Most governments and school stakeholders stress the necessity for a whole school approach to bullying, which include the adoption of policies like the anti-bullying policies and initiatives (Orpinas, 2006). The idea is to reinforce the initiative and help communicate behavioral expectations for the children involved in the daily activities within schools. Though, this has not been implemented fully, but research shows that most schools are seeing the need for this initiative and are taking it positively. It is meant to deal with individuals, basically those who bully and the bully-victims. In its implementation, it must consider other factors like the effects of the environment such as the school cultures, peer influence and family background that can have a major effect on the bullying incidence. It should not be an exclusive focus policy of anti-bullying and its intervention alone, but should also focus on the individuals who are victims of bullies and the long term effects it has on their performance. It is an initiative that should get support from the school management or board of directors and adopted through the entire school system of administration (Carpenter, 2009). This policy development should take the two major component approaches: first is the development of the whole school anti-bulling policy and then the development of the initiative for the whole school in support of the policy.
Traditionally, bullying was perceived by the public as an accidental behavior among the school children, but this view is currently changing considering the effects that the victims of a bully are experiencing. Several children have seriously injured others as a result of bullying, and some even died in the hands of bullies. Before this fateful incidence, the school authorities did not consider bullying as an offense, until when a child was reported dead on his way to the hospital as a result of hitting from a group of bullies. One of the bullies accidentally hit the victim who was a middle-class student at Kings’ school in England with a blunt object. The student had engaged in a fight with another student after classes when one of the older students hit him on the head with a blunt object (Shariff, 2009). He did not die instantly, developed breathing complications on his way to the hospital, where he died. The matter reported to the police and appropriate actions taken against the victims and their parents. It is one of the many incidences of bullying, but only a few reported since they are considered light and lack grounds. It is this incidence of death that unlocked the debate as to whether bullying was a major threat to learning.
