Abortion Controversy
Abortion is one of the most controversial and trending topics across the globe. The subject's contention is associated with the religious, moral, and legal stands. Growing up, I was raised in a pro-life environment, where the topic of abortion was primarily based on a religious viewpoint that implicated that abortion contradicts God's design and sanctity of life. My initial beliefs and opinions on abortion were linked mainly to religious' pro-life stand but have since been challenged by the legal standpoint where women have a right to abort in high-risk pregnancy cases.
Policies on abortion vary across the globe, which has further propelled the controversy since some countries are pro-life while others are pro-abortion. For instance, nations like Angola, Dominican Republic, and Iraq prohibit abortion in totality, while the United States, Russia, and Uruguay are pro-abortion (“Countries Where Abortion is Illegal,” 2022). The legality or illegality of abortion is based on the pregnancy rights that support abortion and the penal code for abortion. For instance, the Dominican Republic has implemented a total abortion ban since 1884, which has sparked significant opposition from abortion-rights activists (“Dominican Republic: End Total Abortion Ban,” 2021). Hence, a total abortion ban can be devastating to women whose pregnancies expose them to health risks, which religion has failed to acknowledge. Therefore, by considering the fatal health risks associated with some pregnancies, women should have a right to safe abortion. Such awareness has also enabled me to abjure my initial opinions and beliefs concerning the subject of abortion.
