Deviance is described as the act of violating social norms. A deviance act is any behaviour that is contradictory to the social norms and expectations CITATION Rob15 \l 3081 (Robert, 2015). They function to prevent individuals from committing deviant acts. Every society has its own set of laws and rules that govern it in both formal and informal settings. Formal acts are those which are dictated by the law while informal ones are dictated by social norms. The society’s perception towards specific human behaviours, that is deviant, varies among societies. These are modelled from their own logical considerations. A good example is the “China One Child Policy”. However, the policy was removed in early 2016 because it seemingly yielded hazardous results that had gradually accumulated over the decades.
In China’s society, having more than one child is considered a deviant act. This law was put into place in 1979 to decelerate and even the rate of the population growth CITATION MRo17 \l 3081 (Rosennberg, 2017). It was implemented as a temporary measure, it continued to be upheld for the next 35 years. However, it was limited to the Han Chinese residing in urban areas.
