Emotional Intelligence
Introduction
Emotional Intelligence is the ability of people to understand and perceive the emotions of other people. It measures the interpersonal skills of a person in a social setting and the capacity to interpret the mood as well as reactions of people. Emotional intelligence also defines the ways in which, a person is able to control their emotions and handle the relationship with other people (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2013). An emotionally intelligent person would have qualities such as empathy, judiciousness, etc. Emotional intelligence is of significant importance in today’s world. It allows the person to perceive and understand the actions as well as reactions of other people they interact. Thus, allowing a person to be empathetic towards the needs and requirements of other people (Farh, Seo, & Tesluk, 2012). Emotional intelligence is also important for a working professional as it allows them to determine the challenges faced by their colleagues.
Discussion
Being emotionally intelligent would enable to evaluate and respond to a person’s emotions in an appropriate manner (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2013). Being emotionally intelligent has become increasingly important these days due to the growing diversity in organizations where a person needs to interact with people belonging to different cultural and traditional backgrounds. There are four dimensions of emotional intelligence.
Perceiving Emotions
Perceiving emotions is the first step in emotional intelligence. It is the ability of a person to perceive and understand the verbal as well as non-verbal responses of a person. The non-verbal signals are the body language or the expressions of the people.
Reasoning with Emotions
The next stage in emotional intelligence is the ability to reason with them. An emotionally intelligent person needs to be able to measure and evaluate the emotions of people as well as respond in an equally emotional manner (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2013). For example, a person grieving over a death of a loved one would expect sympathy and condolences from other people. Thus, an emotionally intelligent person would use appropriate emotions in expressing empathy to the person in grief.
Understanding the Emotions
The third stage in emotional intelligence is to understand the cause of the emotion. An individual needs to be able to determine the reason that is causing the emotion in order to respond to it appropriately.
Managing Emotions
Managing emotions is the last stage of emotional intelligence. A person needs to be able to control their own emotions while interacting with other people as well as while expressing their responses (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2013). This means the person needs to regularize their emotions in accordance to the situation.
