2. Write a critique essay in APA format (4-5 pages), in which you compare and contrast the two shows.
Be sure to make specific connections to textbook material (in-text citations) for each question except the introduction (a). Your response should be in essay form constructed via paragraphs, not an outline or bullet points.
a) Provide a short introduction to your essay (~1 paragraph) that identifies the two shows that you watched, by briefly introducing the shows to your readers.
b) Compare and contrast how each show represents families. How do they portray families and their structures (i.e., nuclear family as ideal)? Are other family structures presented in positive or negative ways?
c) Compare and contrast how the shows portray issues of gender. To what extent are the gender roles presented as traditional or egalitarian (i.e., in what ways are gender expectations discussed explicitly or subtly reinforced?)
d) Compare and contrast how each show portrays issues of race and ethnicity and social class. How diverse, inclusive, and realistic are these portrayals? To what extent are these portrayals positive, negative, or neutral (i.e., do they reinforce positive or negative stereotypes)? What groups/experiences are emphasized and whose are missed?
e) Discuss your overall reactions to the shows. How did they each represent social issues and tell their stories? How did they influence of change how you think about family issues and social diversity in the U.S.? How do you think they potentially influence viewer’s attitudes and perceptions of family issues and social diversity in the U.S.?
*Please note that the production dates of each show vary- your critical analysis could take this into account but you will not lose point if you find it unnecessary.
Overall Guidelines:
• You are expected to make connections to and specifically cite the textbook in answering b-d above (This means you must use in-text citations). The relevance and insightfulness of connections will be an important component of your grade.
• Be sure to provide specific examples from the shows to support your points.
• Be wary of including a summary of the whole show or detailed descriptions of all the characters- keep in mind that I know what the shows are about, have seen them, and want your analysis of the show, rather than summary.
Format Guidelines:
• At the top of your document, include a title with the names of each show you are analyzing.
• Your paper should be at least 4-5 full pages, but no more than 6. Double spaced.
• Be sure to address all the prompts above, then proofread and edit your work. Use APA formatting rules- Times New Roman or Calibri 12-point font, 1-inch margins, etc.
• Number your pages!
• Organize your essay clearly into relevant paragraphs, following the structure of the prompts.
• On a separate page after your paper, include a bibliography in APA format. This should, at the least, include your tv shows and the textbook.
• Save and upload your paper as a Word doc or PDF file to Canvas.
• Enjoy your Spring Break!

Introduction
Indeed, the Americans have had a growing interest in genealogy, the study of family history and ancestors, for a long time. It involves looking back through the generations and connecting through a wider family tree. One of the shows that dwell with the family issue is the Fresh off the Boat cast between 2015 to 2020.
