Modus Operandi and Signature
MO refers to what a crime perpetrator has to perpetrate the intended crime. Meaningfully, the MO is a learned behaviour that is subject to change. An offender's method of operation includes such things like the type of weapon used, the location of the attack and the kind of victim chosen, the way of gaining entry as well as the time of an assault (In James, In Nordby & In Bell, 2014). For instance, rather than using the rope to tie up a victim, the offender may choose to use handcuffs to commit an intended crime. Actually, an offender learn new ways when he/she commits more crime, to help him/her evade detection (Turvey, 2016). On the other hand, offender’s signature serves the psychological or emotional or of the of a crime perpetrator. It reveals an intense fantasy that an offender has about the target victims. The signature of a perpetrator is the exceptional way in which she or he perpetrate crimes may include things such as the words a rapist uses while communicating with his/her victims, the manner in which the person kills, the precise manner in which an offender leaves something at crime scenes, or other indicators. Turvey ( 2016), notes a signature as a scenario where a perpetrator exhibits behaviour within the crime scene and is involved in doings that go past those essential actions to accomplish a crime. The following three scenarios clarify the concept of modus operandi and signature.
Serial Rapist ( Ronnie Shelton):
Ronnie Shelton perpetrated more than 50 rapes. Upon his conviction of 28-rape case, he was sentenced to serve more than 1000 years. In perpetrating his rape crimes, sexual and verbal communication assaults manifested in Shelton’s signature. Verbally, Shelton was outstandingly vulgar and exceptionally degrading. For instance, Shelton made use of comments like, "you understand who I am," and "I have seen you around." Most notably, the sexual assault dominated Shelton’s signature. Unremorsefully, Shelton would rape his targets vaginally and then withdraw and ejaculate on their breasts and their stomachs. He would also regularly masturbate over his prey or force them to masturbate him and sometimes forced them to give him oral sex after which he would force them to swallow the contents. Sarcastically, he would later use their outfits to wipe off his ejaculation.
Shelton’s Modus Operandi involved entering the victims’ residences through window or patio entrance, which faced bushes offering concealment or the wooded space. Shelton was used to wearing a scarf, ski mask or stocking. He deceived his victims that he was not there to rape them rather than to rob them. Shelton’s victims would give in to his violence since they cowered from being thrown to the floor or having a knife held to their throats. Furthermore, Shelton would roar to his victims to keep their eyes down, cover them or even not dare to look at him on an assurance that he would neither hurt them nor their children. After he was done perpetrating his crimes and was prepared to leave the scene of the offense, Shelton would intimidate his victims and warn them against calling the police and those who dared would risk being killed by him in future. The above-discussed instances serve as Shelton’s M.O.
