Homosexuality in Modern Society
There are many ways through which human beings derive and express sexual behaviors (Reilly, 2015). Today's society, in particular, has experienced a lot of challenges in addressing and adapting to these changing sexual behaviors.
Homosexuality, which is defined as same-sex relationship, stands as one of the most controversial sexual behavior facing many countries across the globe. With almost every society having a set rule regarding appropriate and inappropriate sexual behavior, homosexuality has experienced conflicting reactions throughout the world. Notably, however, is the fact that Western societies have been more accommodating to same-sex relationships as compared to African and Middle Eastern societies. In most African and Middle Eastern countries, in fact, homosexuality is outlawed and homosexuals are often subjected to severe punishment.
Western cultures have shown greater tolerance to homosexuality. In most European countries, laws have been put in place to clearly define the legality of same-sex marriage and laws surrounding homosexuality. Such laws give homosexuals legal privileges enjoyed by heterosexual people, allowing them to maintain their identity and live as equal members of the society. Such legal privileges include the right to adopt a child and spousal benefits such as pensions for those who are married among many others. Limitations of such laws nevertheless exist, with same-sex relationships limited to consenting adults and acts of sodomy attracting stern legal ramifications. Having such laws have ensured homosexuals are treated equally, like any other member of society.
