Public offices serve as the link between ordinary citizens and the government. Through these facilities, governments can offer essential services and distribute national resources equitably among all people. Lack of liability is one of the most common issues that compromise service delivery. For the optimal benefit of the masses, public offices must be liable for the utilization and distribution of resources allocated to every unit. Therefore, governments can improve accountability in public offices by establishing a non-partisan supervisory team that audits and punishes corrupt administrators.
A politically inert oversight agency can maintain accountability in public offices by performing inspections and taking necessary actions against culprits. Thomann, Peter, and Fritz argue that lack of liability is attributable to the absence of efficient management strategies to streamline resource allocation, distribution, and use in public offices (302). Unscrupulous administrators are likely to misuse their office powers to compromise the delivery of essential services and resources to ordinary people, but this behavior is controllable if governments constitute independent agencies to oversee public administrators (Anand & Lorne 18). For example, in 2014, a French anti-corruption agency vindicated and jailed the then French leader—President Nicolas Sarkozy—for misappropriating €42.5 million public money. Generally, this evidence suggests that a non-partisan oversight agency can sustain accountability in public offices by evaluating the efficiency of inherent processes and taking appropriate legal remedies against dishonest administrators.
