Private consumption is important in considering closing the production of fossil fuels due to its excessive contribution to carbon emissions. Private consumption has been associated with a huge percentage of carbon emissions, where the jets they use contribute to carbon emissions over 100 times compared to normal consumption (Malm, 2021, pg. 58).
According to Malm (2021, pg. 56-64), SUVs are a big problem. They emit excessive carbon while their owners intend to show off how much money they have, but in reality, it affects others through carbon emissions. The SUVs they purchase are not used for their main role, such as driving in the rugged terrain in Ostermalm; most of the time, they are used within the city, affecting individuals through carbon emission. The IEA report has ranked SUVs as the second-largest contributor to carbon emissions.
Luxury emissions come from the affluent's way of life; they are associated with flying, driving, and yachting. The hypermobility of the wealthy allows them to fly to safer places once they destroy the previous area with carbon emissions (Malm, 2021, pg. 60). Subsistence emissions involve maintaining carbon emissions to meet the specific needs of the people (Malm, 2021, pg. 82). Both must be overcome, but luxury emissions have severe impacts (Malm, 2021, pg. 62).
