However, emotional connection alone is not enough to sustain the perseverance necessary to achieve social change. In this week's Discussion, you analyze examples of social movements to identify common factors that can contribute to their success and sustainability.

•Review three movements of social responsibility from the reading. Think about the common factors when social issues become a movement. Consider the sustainability of each movement you selected and what contributes to the sustainability.

Often, social movements are driven by the impetus of personal and emotional connection to the issue. Even with such forces, social movements are intricate and require more than emotional drive to implement. “Soul of a citizen: Living with conviction in challenging times” by Loeb describes highlights three social moments that were largely successful. First, there was the Martin Luther King racism social movement. Second, is the ad slate magazine by Microsoft social responsibility issues and third is the apartheid in South Africa where students asked companies from America to divest from companies doing business in the country (Loeb, 2010).
Some of the factors that led to the start of these social movements include lack of social and political freedom and discrimination on basis of race for the case of Martin Luther King. For the case of Microsoft, there is lack of social responsibility where the magazine is not clear on whether it is liberal or conservative. The South African case was a blend of discrimination based on race as well as lack of political freedom and unfavorable policies carried out by the foreign government (Loeb, 2010).
The apartheid movement was largely successful despite the powerful forces that dictated the laws. One of the methods they used was to sabotage the economical aspect that supported the implementers of the unfavorable policies.
