Morality encompasses diverse aspects of moral principles or standards that individuals, communities, or business entities derive from particular codes of conduct with foundations laid upon certain philosophies, cultural practices, or religious affiliations. Moral absolutes refer to ethical perspectives, which posit that particular deeds are considered completely right (good) or wrong (bad). For example, actions such as killing, stealing, or hurting people in any way are considered ‘absolutely wrong’ irrespective of the intended outcome. Absolute morals usually follow the universal moral principles of nature that uphold human dignity and respect for ‘higher’ supernatural beings. It is my belief that moral absolutes exist and are important for upholding respect for human life, natural laws, and God’s law because they guiding all human actions towards doing right.
The respect for human life is universal in all societies. An action, such as killing, is considered a highly condemned vice in all societies. There are situations in which killing may be justified, though. For example, in the event of defending one’s life, or hanging a murder suspect for purposes of fulfilling the laws that govern actions of murder. However, in all its forms, murder falls short of the respect of human life in spite of any justification. Consequently, a moral absolute exists, in this case, as it prohibits individuals from killing others irrespective of the underlying argument or anticipated outcomes for the purposes of upholding human life. Josephson Institute (2010) indicates on Moral Absolutes and Kant’s Categorical Imperatives, that ethical obligations are actions based on higher external moral principles that create absolute duties, which individuals must perform irrespective of societal expectations or other inclinations.
Natural law expects all individuals to act in a manner that is deemed universally acceptable across the entire human race (George, 2001). Universally acceptable actions are those skewed towards engaging in deeds that are right (good) instead of those considered generally wrong (bad). For example, stealing food is universally wrong even though the doer of the action would act so to fulfill his or her hunger in the event that he or she cannot afford food. This means there exists a moral absolute that prohibits the poor person from stealing food to fulfill his or her hunger because the action is universally unacceptable and wrong. Rather, he or she should beg for the food, instead of stealing because the action is universally wrong irrespective of the underlying issues or motive, which is satisfying hunger.
The Bible, which preaches God’s law, teaches us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. According to the Bible, loving one’s neighbor is God’s greatest commandment that guides all human actions towards engaging in morally right actions (Mark 12: 28-34; Deut. 6: 1-19 King James Version).
