Police Defunding in NYC
Following the recent events surrounding the police department all across America, there have been increased calls relating to defunding the police. Defunding the police refers to reallocating or redirecting funds away from the police department to other functions and government activities within a given municipality. Defunding the police is often mistaken to mean abolishing policing (Ray, 2022). Most times, even the people who call for the abolishment of the police always state that they do not call for the abolishment of law enforcement but prefer having those sections of the police department that result in damaging situations within the law enforcement be chopped (Ray, 2022). After the harmful elements have been removed from the police department, the people call for replacements that understand the calling towards law enforcement.
Defunding the police has different aspects. The most common refers to the fiscal policies of a city or a municipal government. It involves fiscal responsibility, developing a market-driven approach towards how we utilize the taxpayers' money to enjoy the best benefits that would accrue after having paid for a given service. It involves ensuring that the police, because we pay for their needs and services and even ensure that their families have the best form of life possible, provide the best service commensurate for the money we pay as taxpayers (Ray, 2022). In a typical market scenario or a layman's understanding, defunding the police would mean ensuring that the citizens get value for money paid towards enhancing law and order enforcement in our city.
The NYC Council took steps to Defund the Police.
Different advocacy groups have been cited calling for the defunding of the police since George Floyd, a black American, was allegedly brutally murdered by a policeman. Such organizations such as Communities United for Police Reform and Make the Road New York has been demanding for reallocation of one billion dollars previously allocated to the police department to be reallocated towards other services for the people and residents of New York, including specific amenities such as education and community outreach programs (Moses, 2022). The advocacy groups have targeted the New York City Council through organized gatherings to push the council towards ensuring that the cited amount is channelled towards other activities other than funding the police department.
In June 2020, a breakthrough arose from the New York City Council's vote on defunding the police. On this date, the council voted yes on the vote geared towards reallocating funds away from the police. The sitting Mayor, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the council of New York cut allocation towards the New York Police Department budget, whose budget was quoted to be six billion dollars. However, some activists claim that the resolutions made by the New York Council have not been implemented and seek to advocate for strict adherence to these resolutions through the 2022 fiscal
